Eleven years ago, Mia took part in High Tide’s summer scheme, a decision that set her on a career path she has never looked back on.
While still at school, Mia first heard about High Tide when a representative visited to speak about the programme. She decided to join the summer scheme, completing her work placement at PD Ports, where she spent a week on the survey craft, learning how operations were carried out.
Mia was determined to get ahead of her peers leaving school. She wanted to make connections, gain experience, and get herself noticed by a business.
Her favourite part of the experience was meeting the team at PD Ports and gaining insight into their knowledge and expertise. It was then that Mia realised she wanted to be part of the maritime industry.
Although there weren’t any opportunities available at the time, Mia didn’t give up. She showed determination and initiative, continually asking about career opportunities. Her persistence paid off, PD Ports created an apprenticeship for her, something they had never done before.
High Tide opened Mia’s eyes to a career she never knew existed and gave her the chance to start her journey much earlier than if she had taken a traditional route. Today, Mia works in the conservancy department at PD Ports and has continued to progress in her career.
For Mia, High Tide was life-changing. She encourages anyone considering the programme to grab the opportunity with both hands, get ahead of the competition, and build their future.
